Calcada House
"A layered dialogue between old-world character and contemporary restraint"
About the Space
Designed by Pinwheel Ventures, Calcada House is a study in how a restrained palette can still produce richly expressive interiors. The home takes a distinctly European, old-world vocabulary—dark timber, framed artwork, carved furniture, aged-looking metals and decorative wall surfaces—and edits it through a contemporary lens. The visual identity is immediately established through warm, chalky neutrals and the repeated use of timber. But the rooms are not minimalist: they are deliberately layered with objects, artwork, upholstery and furniture that give the home the feeling of a collected residence. The contrast between the pale architectural shell and deeper walnut-toned joinery is particularly effective, adding depth without making the spaces feel visually heavy. One of the strongest interior gestures is the treatment of the walls. Large-scale, delicate botanical and line drawn artwork is integrated almost as an architectural finish, rather than hung as an afterthought. In the living spaces, this creates a textured backdrop against which contemporary sofas, slender dining furniture and darker timber pieces sit comfortably. The result is atmospheric and graphic without becoming ornamental. The bedrooms shift the mood further towards intimacy. Upholstered beds, generous neutral bedding, fluted and timber furniture, linen-like textures and warm bedside lamps create a soft, hotel-like sense of comfort. In one room, a dusty sage-green chest of drawers becomes a restrained colour punctuation; elsewhere, a patterned upholstered headboard and darker timber cabinetry introduce a more traditional character. The living and dining spaces are where the project's mix of eras becomes most apparent. A contemporary television wall sits opposite and alongside antique-inspired consoles, carved timber furniture, woven and upholstered seating, brass-toned lighting and framed art. The dining area is kept elegant and light, while timber screens and joinery provide rhythm and a sense of enclosure. What makes the project distinctive is this controlled tension: ornate furniture against quiet architecture, graphic wall treatments against soft upholstery, dark timber against pale surfaces, and heritage references against contemporary planning. Pinwheel Ventures has not attempted to make the home look new; instead, the design gives it the visual depth of a place with a history.
The Ask
The ask was not simply to create a luxurious home, but to create one with character and visual memory. The interiors needed to move away from the predictable language of polished contemporary luxury and instead feel warmer, more collected and slightly nostalgic. The design had to accommodate contemporary living while introducing the richness normally associated with more traditional interiors: substantial timber, crafted furniture, artwork, patterned upholstery and decorative surfaces. The challenge was to bring these elements together without allowing the home to become heavy, overly classical or theme-driven. There was also a clear need for continuity without repetition. The same warm neutral foundation travels through the home, while individual spaces gain distinction through furniture, wall treatments, timber detailing and controlled injections of colour.
The Result
Calcada House is the result of a carefully calibrated blend of heritage and modernity. The home feels luxurious not because every surface is embellished, but because the individual elements have been given room to speak: the grain of timber, the softness of upholstery, the patina of darker furniture, the delicacy of the wall drawings and the warmth of low-level lighting. The living spaces have the character of a collected European home, while the bedrooms become quieter, more cocooning retreats. Green appears selectively rather than as a dominant colour; artwork is treated as part of the composition; and traditional furniture is balanced with simpler contemporary forms. The finished residence therefore feels cultivated rather than decorated. It has the richness of a traditional interior, the restraint of a contemporary one, and a distinctly residential warmth that makes the luxury feel authentic rather than staged.
