About the Space

Mohor—a Marathi word evocative of prosperity, abundance and flourishing—forms the foundation of this home that celebrates the richness of Indian living through a distinctly contemporary lens. Inspired by the spirit of New India in the 1950s, House of Mohor draws from an era of confidence, optimism and cultural evolution, when Indian modernism was beginning to discover its own identity. It was a time when traditional craftsmanship, familiar forms and emerging modernist ideals came together to create a language that was rooted, yet forward looking. The interiors reinterpret this sensibility for contemporary living. Classic proportions, Indian details, warm timber, handcrafted furniture and nostalgic references are layered with clean lines, refined silhouettes and a restrained material palette. Traditional elements are not recreated literally; instead, they are distilled and reimagined to feel relevant to the present. The result is a home that carries the warmth of memory without becoming nostalgic—a contemporary expression of Indian elegance, layered with character, craftsmanship and a quiet sense of abundance.

The Ask

The brief was to create a luxurious home that felt deeply personal, warm and timeless, while moving away from the expected language of contemporary luxury. The design needed to accommodate the comforts and aspirations of modern living while retaining a strong connection to Indian sensibilities. Rather than creating spaces that felt overly ornate or conventionally traditional, the intention was to find a balance between familiarity and freshness—between the comfort of inherited memories and the clarity of contemporary design. The challenge was to create an interior that felt abundant without being excessive, detailed without being overwhelming, and distinctly Indian without relying on literal interpretations of tradition.

The Result

House of Mohor emerged as a home where Indian memory meets contemporary refinement. Warm wooden furniture, crafted details, classic forms, patterned surfaces and carefully selected artworks bring depth and personality to the spaces. The interiors are layered with references that feel familiar, yet are composed with a contemporary restraint that allows every element to breathe. The visual language moves effortlessly between the old and the new—where a traditional inspired chair sits comfortably within a clean, modern composition; where decorative patterns become moments of character; and where the richness of craftsmanship is balanced by calm walls, generous light and thoughtful proportions. Every space is designed to feel lived in rather than merely styled. There is a sense of inheritance in the details, but also a clear optimism about the future. House of Mohor is an expression of abundance—not through excess, but through richness of memory, material, craft and experience. A home rooted in Indian elegance, reimagined for the present
